I have always wanted to try out woodblock printing, so I found myself a snowflake stamp and printed my Christmas cards! This tutorial will show you the materials I used and give you some ideas for your own printing experiments!
To print your own cards you will need a woodblock stamp, some water based printing ink, acrylic paint, a plate, a spoon and a selection of card. You can buy some beautiful stamps from this Etsy shop.
I wanted to create beautiful icy looking snowflake impressions so I decided to mix white and cyan paint. To do this I put two blobs of paint on my plate and then dragged them outwards with my spoon.
I wanted to keep the two colours distinct and streaky, so when I added more blue I used a cocktail stick to drag the paint through the white printing ink. I wanted to use acrylic paint to get an intense colour, but it will dry quicker than the printing ink, so be prepared to add more of your bright colour to the plate as you go along.
When your paint is ready, pop your stamp into it and blot off any excess on the side of your plate. Then start printing!
When you are printing your cards, try opening them out and printing across the crease and onto the back.
You could also try printing some wrapping paper and gift tags!
When you are finished printing, wash your stamp in warm water and use an old toothbrush to clean away any stubborn residues of paint.
