Making or personalising your own fabric is really exciting and with Versacraft ink you can do just that! This tutorial will show you how to use stamps to decorate fabric which you can then make into anything you like, smaller pieces will make gorgeous covered buttons and larger panels would make a great addition to a quilt. The inks come in lots of different colours and can also be used on paper and wood.
All you need to get started is some Versacraft ink, some rubber stamps and a selection of fabric. If you are making something that will be washed, wash and press your fabric before starting.
You need a nice even covering of ink on your stamp so that your print doesn’t come out blotchy. The ink is quite liquid so you can easily see when you have good coverage.
Place your stamp onto your fabric and apply even pressure. Be careful not to move it once you have placed it down because it will smudge. Lots of stamps have a handy line down the side, which shows you where the bottom of the design is. This is a great help when you are stamping a repeat pattern.
Be careful not to overload the stamp with ink, if you push it down too hard you will cover the sides of the stamp too and that will transfer onto the fabric. If this happens, simply wipe off the edges with a damp cloth.
Experiment with the kind of fabric you use, even a slight change in texture or weave can make a big difference to the finished result. The photo below shows the difference between a standard calico on the left and a finer curtain lining on the right.
If you want to change ink colours or have finished stamping, be sure to clean your stamp on a damp cloth or piece of kitchen towel. Don’t rub it because that can damage your stamp, instead blot gently until the ink has been removed.
Once your ink has dried you can heat fix it by using an iron, set to the correct temperature for the fabric that you have used.
